FAQs

What is preventative maintenance?

One of the best ways to ensure the maximum life of your car is to follow a preventative maintenance routine. Preventative car maintenance is more than just an oil change. It involves having your vehicle regularly inspected, including your tires, as well as having fluids changed. This ensures that your vehicle stays in good working order and that any problems that may arise are caught early. This helps avoid costly auto repair expenses in the future that would take up both your time and money.

The best course of action is to follow your vehicle’s manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedule. A common preventative maintenance routine is to have your car serviced at 30,000-mile, 60,000-mile, and 90,000-mile intervals. You may need to have preventative maintenance done more frequently if you usually drive short commutes, drive in stop-and-go traffic, or tow trailers or heavy loads.

Here at Lamb’s Tire & Automotive, depending on your vehicle’s service interval mileage and needs, the preventative maintenance services that our ASE-certified technicians perform can include the following services and more:

    • Oil change and oil filter replacement
    • Checking and/or replacing fuel filters and air filters
    • Tire balancing and tire rotation
    • Wheel alignment
    • Checking all lights and signals
    • Inspecting tires for wear and checking air pressure
    • Checking and/or flushing system fluids (brake, power steering, etc.)
    • Inspecting and/or replace brake pads

We can help optimize the life of your car and keep it running as it should. Contact a Lamb’s Tire & Automotive location near you today to get more information on the recommended preventative maintenance for your vehicle and schedule your appointment.

How do I know if I should have my brakes serviced?

Your brakes are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle and you rely on them every time you drive your car. If you start to notice changes in the way your brakes are performing, you should bring your car into our brake repair shop as soon as possible. Ignoring brake issues can cause more expensive problems down the road and compromise safety.

Over time, heat and friction from normal use start to wear down the components of your braking system. That is why we recommend having brakes inspected at least annually. This will help ensure the best safety and performance.

There are several clear signs that indicate it is time to have your brakes serviced:

  • High-pitched squeaking or squealing when you press the brakes
  • A scraping or grinding sound, which can occur when not braking
  • Shaking or vibration when braking

If you are currently experiencing any of these indicators, schedule an appointment at your local Lamb’s Tire & Automotive to have your brakes inspected and brake repair done as soon as possible.

What should I do when a dashboard warning light comes on?

Many of the vehicles on the road today are equipped with sophisticated internal monitoring and electronic control systems. Essentially, your car is operated mainly by a computer. Part of your car’s monitoring system includes a variety of different dashboard warning lights.

These warning lights indicate that something is not operating as it should or that a fluid level might be low. If you have a dashboard warning light come on, don’t ignore it. It is important to bring your vehicle into an auto repair shop as soon as you can. This will help prevent even bigger, more expensive problems from developing.

If you have a warning light on, our ASE-certified technicians will use engine diagnostics to tap into your vehicle’s computer system and determine what the light signifies. We can check a variety of engine systems and components, including your ignition system, electrical system, emissions, and more.

Schedule an appointment at one of our Austin area auto repair locations today for your engine diagnostic needs.

Does the oil filter need to be replaced every time I have my oil changed?

Here at Lamb’s Tire & Automotive, we recommend replacing the oil filter every time the oil is changed, which should be done approximately every 3,000 miles (closer to 5,000 miles if full synthetic oil is used).

Some car manufacturers say that the oil filter only needs to be replaced with every other oil change. But, you have to take into account that the oil filters on most cars today have been downsized from the previously “standard” quart-sized filter to a pint-sized filter. At that capacity, the oil filters in today’s vehicles won’t perform well if you wait until a second oil change.

Every oil change service here at Lamb’s Tire & Automotive includes an oil filter change. Schedule your appointment today for a high-quality oil and filter change, along with a multi-point vehicle inspection.

What’s the purpose of having my tires rotated?

Good quality tires are an investment that you want to protect and make sure you get optimal performance and the full life out of. Including your tires in your regular preventative maintenance routine will improve the longevity of your tires by ensuring they are wearing evenly. One of the best ways to do this is by having your tires rotated.

Unequal tire wear can quickly shorten the life of the tire, reduce your fuel economy, and cause other tread problems or tire repair needs which, in turn, can cause safety issues. So, here at Lamb’s Tire & Automotive, we always recommend you have a tire rotation done with every oil change. When a tire rotation service is done—depending on your vehicle, the type of tires you have, and what was previously done—we rotate the tires in alternating patterns. This helps ensure even wear and optimal tire performance.

Our technicians will also examine the tires’ tread and inflation, and make sure all the lug nuts are properly tightened. Contact one of our auto repair and tire shop locations near you today to schedule a tire rotation and help maintain the life and performance of your tires.

What are the signs that I might need my car’s AC system serviced?

Especially during the warmer months that our Austin area experiences, having an optimally working AC is something that many drivers view as a necessity.

There are signs to look out for that may mean you need to bring your car in for AC system diagnostics and repair as soon as you can. These include:

  • The AC blows only slightly cooler air than outside or is blowing warm air
  • The air blowing from your AC smells moist, rotten, or like mildew
  • The A/C only operates when driving and not while idling
  • Your vents don’t push out much air

Car AC systems wear out gradually with use. If a vehicle’s AC system is not regularly maintained, it loses roughly 5% of its original efficiency each year. That is why it is recommended to have your car AC system inspected annually. Having your system checked regularly will help make sure it is running in optimal condition and prevent costly car AC repair down the road.

Here at Lamb’s Tire & Automotive, we are the specialists in car AC repair in Austin. Our ASE-certified technicians can inspect your AC system, identify any current issues through AC diagnostics, and perform the necessary car AC repair you may need. Book an appointment at a location near you to make sure you stay cool!

How do I know if I need new tires?

Through normal daily driving, even the highest quality tires start to wear in time. The more worn tires become, the thinner the tread becomes and less traction you will have on the road. It is common for tires to need to be replaced every couple of years. Your driving habits, local weather, and road conditions can also impact how long your tires will last.

This is why it is very important to visually inspect your tires regularly and avoid undue safety risks if you are in fact needing new tires. Ignoring signs of extreme wear or damage can end up resulting in a flat tire or blowout.

Signs that you may need new tires include:

  • Tire tread less than 4/32 deep
  • Uneven tread wear
  • Cracks in the sidewalls
  • Objects embedded in the tire
  • Weak spots, bulges, and blisters

If you notice any of these signs, your car is having trouble gripping in wet conditions, or you are feeling more vibration than usual when driving, it is time to make an appointment at our tire shop.
